Jacques Vieau
If you’re visiting Milwaukee, you might consider taking a stroll to Mitchell Park and see the Jacques Vieau monument. This historic marker commemorates the first European settler in the Milwaukee area. The French-Canadian fur trader, Jacques Vieau, was the man responsible for the founding of many communities in Wisconsin.
Jacques was born near Montreal, Canada, and arrived in the area in the 1780s. He worked as a fur trader for the North West Fur Company. He began establishing trading posts in Green Bay, Kewaunee, Sheboygan, and Manitowoc.
He was also responsible for establishing the earliest settlement in Milwaukee. According to historical records, he and his wife Angelique Roy had twelve children together. Besides establishing his trade post, Jacques was also a successful farmer. Jacques and his wife had a good relationship with the Native Americans in the area. They built a cabin overlooking the Menomonee River.
While Jacques didn’t live permanently in Milwaukee, his daughter Josette married Solomon Juneau, the founder of the City of Milwaukee. In 1819, Juneau took over Jacques’ trading post. He eventually became the city’s first mayor.
Modernist marvels in Milwaukee and Saint Louis
If you are in search of an architectural tour through modernism in St. Louis, you may want to consider going to the Saint Louis Art Museum. It has an exciting exhibit that covers the span of a century.
The exhibit is curated by David Conradsen and Genny Cortinovis and begins with the early stirrings of modernism in the 1930s. It then continues through the decades, concluding with Eero Saarinen’s Gateway Arch.
The modernist buildings featured in the exhibit are meant to show how modernist thinking was pervasive in both the public and private sectors. These structures were designed with the intention of achieving “progress” through industrial materials.
The architecture was often characterized by parabolic forms and the use of thin shelled concrete. The architecture also demonstrated formal innovation. The design of these structures emphasized minimal ornamentation.
The Milwaukee Art Museum also has a Modernist gallery. This gallery is arranged into vignettes focused on specific works, and includes reproductions of prints by Charles and Ray Eames, contemporary textiles, and objects by pioneering women industrial designers. Horticultural learning center
The Horticultural learning center at Mitchell Park Milwaukee WI is a popular destination. It features more than 750 species of plants from around the world, including exotic flowers. Domes redevelopment plan
The Mitchell Park Domes are a beloved historic landmark in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. But they’ve been in disrepair for years. They have been listed as one of the 11 Most Endangered Historic Places in the United States by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
